Aharon Shaked, Online Casino Pioneer, Dies at Age 58

One of Israel’s wealthiest men and co-founder of the online gambling giant, 888, Aharon Shaked, passed away on Saturday at the age of 58 after suffering from a serious illness.
It was while practicing dentistry in Israel and attending a dentistry conference in Monte Carlo during 1990 that Aharon Shaked noticed that large amounts of people were making their way to the city’s casino.
After returning to Israel Aharon approached his brother Avi and together they decided to establish an online casino.
Neither Aharon nor Avi had any experience in gambling and in order to learn the trade and pick up some knowledge to help them create their empire it was necessary for them to spend lots of time visiting the casino in Taba, in Sinai.
The Shaked brothers made contact with the Ben-Yitzhak brothers who they knew had the technological know-how that would be needed for their new venture. Aharon and Avi together with the Ben-Yitzhak brothers took out loans which enabled them to buy a gaming license in Antiqua for $100,000 and founded 888.
The company floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2005 with Aharon and Avi Shaked owning 70 percent of the stocks. They each sold stocks worth $91.3 million and each held onto stocks worth $267 million.
Following the company listing, Aharon Shaked, told a British newspaper that his new found wealth would not in any way change his life-style and that he would much rather put the profits into charities for underprivileged children than spend the money in fancy restaurants or buying a new car.
