Alternate Venue Announced For European Poker Tour

The European Poker Tour has officially announced that it will have an alternate venue for its Season 6 opening event which was due to take place in Moscow next month.

The change in venue became inevitable following Russia’s clampdown on gambling in the country and poker being stripped of its sport classification. It has also become illegal to play poker outside of designated gambling zones.

The event, which is scheduled to take place from August 18TH to August 23rd will now be known as the EPT Kiev Sports Poker Championship. This event will be in partnership with the Ukrainian Poker Federation and will be held under the regulation of the Ukrainian Minister of Youth, Family and Sport.

The EPT Kiev Sports Poker Championship will take place at the Kiev Sports Palace. The sponsors of the EPT Events, PokerStars has notified all its players who qualified online for the event that was to take place in Moscow that that their packages, including their buy-in and hotel, will be converted to EPT Kiev packages. Alternatively, they can take a credit for a future event or receive the cash equivalent value.

Following in the footsteps of Russia, the Ukrainian government last month approved new laws which temporarily ban gambling in the country. New legislation is likely to be drawn up to restrict gambling to specific zones in the country. The temporary laws ban slot machines, casinos, bookmaking and online gambling from Ukrainian citizens while the law on poker remains vague and is still classified as a sport.
