Australia to Face Online Addiction

In a recent study by casino experts, it has been found that the world could face a new generation of gambling addicts if more is not done to curb problem gamblers.

Although most online gamblers would assume that it is games such as poker, blackjack and slots that are the biggest contributors to the problem, many are surprised to learn that it is in actual fact sports betting.

The Australians in particular are having a problem with sports betting. Although sport betting is regulated by the government, as it is one of the few legalized online gambling portals, this is ironically the area of concern. The government, by attempting to regulate an area of online betting, has made it too accessible to the public and in a way has given the green light for anyone of legal age to gamble. Other forms of online betting, such as poker, roulette and bingo, are not legal in Australia, yet this accounts for over $1 billion exchanging hands.

A further problem is that sport betting is not seen as much of a taboo as online poker and other such games are. Furthermore, the Australian culture is very much geared around sports. Betting on one’s sports team is seen more as a show of support for the team than a classic form of gambling. For this reason, it is difficult to single out potential gambling addicts as sport betting has become the norm in Australia.
