Betfair Complains to EU about proposed Greek Law

Betfair Sportsbook has been struggling for quite some time to get its foot into the Greek online gambling market by doing away with monopoly groups that currently govern the industry.

Despite the fact that Betfair has spent a lot of time trying to guide the Greeks to create a fair and open gambling market with the idea that their suggested principals would be taken into account in the laws proposed by them, Betfair is presently very angry that almost all of its suggestions were ignored. The Greek government is contradicting the European Union law by creating a proposal that will not allow competition into the market.

At present the European Commission is reviewing the laws that have been proposed by Greece and is said to be giving its opinion on the draft at the beginning of July.

Betfair has stated that quite a few elements in the proposal do not uphold the European laws of free trade and competition and has therefore requested the Commission to review the matter and to engage with the Greek authorities in an attempt to address the concerns raised in their complaint.

Betfair will request the European Union to consider a few elements that they are not happy with, one being the fact that the Greeks have placed a blanket ban on betting exchanges which is definitely not to Betfair’s advantage as it is a leader in the market in this area.

The Greek proposal also wants licensees to establish a Greek corporate presence forcing the group to pay taxes to the government and calling for licensees to host their servers and payment processors in Greece.

Betfair is also objecting to the fact that a unique player’s ID card will have to be obtained by online gamblers.
