The Chinese government announced that it would be launching a new campaign to crack down further on internet betting this week. The campaign, which is expected to last for six months, is being organized by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security and another seven top government departments. The announcement regarding the campaign was made by the vice minister of the Ministry of Public Security, Huang Ming at the beginning of the week.
According to a statement issued by the government, the new scheme will focus on “major and severe cases, uproot domestic and foreign groups that organize online gambling, and severely punish criminals.”
Not only sites that provide betting services will be targeted by the new campaign, however. Ming said that attention will also be turned to “underground banks and third party payment platforms that provide banking services to gambling groups.”
But while the government seems determined to carry out a complete crackdown on internet betting in the country, not everyone is optimistic that this could happen. “In western countries, gambling is legal, so almost all domestic online gambling websites establish their servers overseas and this is a big obstacle for the police,” noted one Shanghai prosecutor during a radio interview.
The government also plans to prosecute online websites that provide links to illegal online gambling sites, which will deal a severe blow to the country’s affiliate industry.
