As a result of the confidential records of millions of customers of one of the UK’s leading bookmakers, Ladbrokes, being offered for sale to The Mail on Sunday newspaper, Ladbrokes customers have had every right to be very worried.
The records, which included Ladbrokes’ customers’ home addresses, dates of birth, customer account numbers, phone numbers, email addresses and details of their gambling history was offered by a mystery man with an Australian accent. The information was given on 10,000 customers and he also offered the newspaper access to Ladbrokes’ database of 4.5 million customers from the UK and other parts of the world.
The theft is now at the centre of a criminal investigation and Ladbrokes are working with the police, the Information Commissioner’s Office (Britain’s data watchdog) as well as the newspaper in an attempt to identify and apprehend the culprit.
The mysterious Australian, who gave his name as “Daniel” claimed to be a computer security expert who had previously worked at Ladbrokes in Britain and was now representing a company by the name of DSS Enterprises, based in Melbourne, Australia. However, the company, which is run by a Sri Lankan-born IT expert, Dinitha Subasinghe, denied any involvement in the theft of the data.
Ladbrokes are presently contacting all their customers in order to reassure them that their passwords, credit card details and any other financial details are safe and apologizing for this breach in security. They are also advising them that everything possible is being done in order to protect their personal information.
