LGA Malta Chief Announces Summary of New Plans

The Lotteries and Gaming Authority of Malta (LGA) which is one of the world’s principal gambling licensing bodies has issued over 335 licenses to about 250 operators since its inception. An amount of 5.6 million Euros was paid in gaming duties by the online gambling sector in 2008 and the amount increased to 19 million Euros in 2009.

A new chief executive officer, Reuben Portanier, was appointed by LGA a few months ago and in an interview given by him to The Sunday Times newspaper just before the forthcoming IGE-ICEi exposition in London he tried to create an awareness of the LGA representation at the exposition.

Portanier stated that operators needed to understand the business environment in Malta completely before trying to establish a business there. He added that operators usually only enquired about legal, technical matters and taxation and that there would, therefore, be representatives from Maltese telecommunication providers, audit firms, law firms and real estate agents amongst the many other operators having a presence at the exhibition.

He also stated that the LGA is committed to the European Union principles of free movement of goods and service between its member nations and that socially responsible gambling and keeping out money-launderers and operators who are involved in other illegal activities is also very important to the company.

LGA previously had a huge backlog in license processing and since Portanier’s appointment as CEO he has set a target to speed up the processing of licenses by 40%.

Despite the global economic conditions and the major challenge in trying to keep up to date with advanced technology, Portanier was confident that the company would see an increase in the number of licenses being issued.
