More French Licenses Issued by ARJEL

Although a set of licenses was issued by ARJEL, the online gambling regulator of France, shortly before the commencement of the FIFA Football World Cup in South Africa there were many popular names that had not been issued licenses.

At the time ARJEL revealed that they were processing the remaining applications and that no application had been rejected until then. ARJEL advised that it would not take long before further applications would be issued and they have, in fact, already issued five more online gambling operators through a second list.

ARJEL’S second list includes Partouche for an online poker license through Partouche Gaming France SAS, Chili Poker for an online poker license through Gaming lliad SAS and FriendBet for a sports betting license through LIL Managers Limited. The second list also includes PokerStars, the biggest online poker operator as well as the lead sponsor of the European Poker Tour. Operating a French domain online poker room will fit well into PokerStar’s’ future plans.

PartyGaming was one of the most awaited names in the second ARJEL list and they received five licenses for several of their brands. PartyGaming’s flagship brand, PartyPoker was granted a poker license and two more existing brands received sports betting licenses. A further two brands were especially created for the French online gambling market through B2B and deals with French companies. LuckyJeux is an online poker room that has the AB Groupe, one of the largest television broadcasters in France, as its partner. AFCPoker is also an online poker room in collaboration with Aviation Club de France.

Although the new sports betting licensees can commence operating immediately both the old and the new poker licensees have to await permission to start operations due to a complaint filed by Malta before the European Commission. Malta is opposed to the common definition of “online gambling”. The issue was due to be sorted out by the end of last month but there is still no news of any progress.
