New Jersey Gives Green Light to Online Gambling

New Jersey seems to be one step closer to legalizing intrastate online gambling following the approval of a pending proposal by Senate and Assembly lawmakers.

Should intrastate online gambling be legalized it will see existing casinos in the state having an opportunity to run online portals allowing visitors to wager at poker and casino games online. It will, however be necessary for casinos to apply for and obtain a special license in order to run the online gambling service.

Sixty three lawmakers voted in favor and eleven voted against the proposal while three lawmakers abstained in the vote.

Until State Governor Chris Christie signs the proposal into law it is not yet plain sailing. However, the bill was co-sponsored by Senator Raymon Lesniak (D-Union) and Senator Joseph Kryillos (R-Middlesex) and also has the backing of politicians from across the political spectrum.

Senator Lesniak stated that the bill had two- way support and that they are optimistic that Gov. Christie will sign this very important piece of legislation into law in order to revive the state’s gaming industry. He added that their state’s gaming industry would strive with this law as it would create many more jobs as well as much needed tax revenue for the people of New Jersey.

The meaning of Intrastate online gambling is that the wagering will be confined within the limits of the state’s borders and will only be open to residents of New Jersey.

Supporters of the proposal are certain that it will put New Jersey ahead of other states in a growing competitive regional casino market even though there are fears that the law could be a violation of US federal law, especially the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
