Polish Ski Town Fined Heavily for Advertizing Online Gambling

The largest ski resort in Poland, Zakopane, is in deep trouble with the Polish Customs Chamber and has been fined heavily for its’ recent advertising of a French online sportsbook “Bet-at-home”. The “Bet-at-home” name and logo appeared on banners and on contestants’ uniforms at the Wielka Koskiew ski jumping venue during the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup event which was held in Zakopane on January 22nd and January 23rd 2010.

Polish online gambling is presently unregulated and it has also banned offshore gambling sites. Internet gambling laws in Poland, like many other countries in Eastern Europe, is in a state of confusion at present and no Polish internet gambling sites are operating until the government is in a position to license operators.

Many Polish people are gambling online regularly which has resulted in the Polish government realizing that there is a fortune to be made by regulating online gambling. The Polish government has decided to look into a regulatory platform for licensing in the country while land based casinos in Poland are also fighting for their right to provide services on the internet.

The Customs Chamber in Poland implemented new laws on 1st January 2010 prohibiting advertising of online gambling interests and Zakopane is now facing a fine as high as 300,000 euro. According to the organizer of the World Cup events if they pay the fine the World Cup will have run at a loss.

While the Tatra Skiing Association feels that the advertising contract with the French gambling company was signed before l January 2010, “Bet-at-home” is arguing that the new gambling laws violate EU free trade standards and that Poland may be fined for its restrictive actions.
