Report Outlines Online Gambling Presence in Costa Rica

It may be small in size, but Costa Rica is proving itself in a big way in the online gambling industry. This tiny country in Latin America boasts no less than 500 online gambling operators who call it home, an industry which generates $14.5 million for the country’s economy.

A report, entitled Costa Rica Gaming and Gambling 2011, put out by Research and Markets group examines Costa Rica’s online gambling business and shows that it has become a haven for online gambling operators and software providers. The country has no internet gambling legislation, instead offering commercial licenses to operators.

The report by R & M commented on the general situation governing online gambling in the region. A spokesman for the group said: “It is believed that if both the legal and illegal gaming activities were combined in Latin America it is likely that the region would generate over US$150 billion a year. The twelve principle gambling countries in this region generate combined revenues of over US$33 billion.”

The report said that Latin Americans spend around US$10 billion a year on gaming and gambling and it is estimated that on average each inhabitant in this region spends US$250 a year on gaming and gambling.

“Costa Rica, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Panama and Venezuela are considered to be the most prolific gambling countries in the region,” said the spokesman.
