The MECN Research Company and the Swiss legal firm MME Partners jointly conducted a survey on Switzerland’s view on online gambling.
The study found that without any pressure whatsoever from any external sources, Switzerland is presently heading towards an online gambling liberalization that could serve as a role model for other non-EU markets such as the United States.
According to Martin Oelbermann of MECN, besides Switzerland heading for online gambling liberalization, the country is also concentrating on opening up the online casino division as opposed to most EU countries such as France who are only focusing on liberalization plans on the online sportsbetting and poker segments. Online and Offline casino operators would, therefore, be well advised to pay special attention to developments in Switzerland.
Martin Oelbermann of MECN feels that because Switzerland has such an enlightened approach to poker the online poker segment will probably also be included in Switzerland’s planned liberalization. He also feels that Switzerland could prove to be a role model for other non-EU countries by being one of the first western countries to open up sections of its gambling market because of pressure from commercial competition like foreign online companies.
Oelbermann stated further that there are similarities between the US and the Swiss gambling market because other than the World Trade Organization dispute both countries are free to contemplate a potential liberalization without any pressure by third parties such as the European Commission when drafting and reviewing their regulations.
Both the US and Switzerland have a strong federal system that will allow them to draft its own gambling regulations and it will be a challenge for them to find a binding and nationwide regulation for all states.
