It may be small in size, but Costa Rica is proving itself in a big way in the online gambling industry. This tiny country in Latin America boasts no less than 500 online gambling operators who call it home, an industry which generates $14.5 million for the country’s economy.

A report, entitled Costa Rica Gaming and Gambling 2011, put out by Research and Markets group examines Costa Rica’s online gambling business and shows that it has become a haven for online gambling operators and software providers. New Jersey seems to be one step closer to legalizing intrastate online gambling following the approval of a pending proposal by Senate and Assembly lawmakers.

Should intrastate online gambling be legalized it will see existing casinos in the state having an opportunity to run online portals allowing visitors to wager at poker and casino games online. A recent study took place in Quebec and was financed by the province in order to investigate the gambling habits of people living in Quebec.

The results of the study, which was based on a telephone survey of 11,888 Quebecers during the summer of 2009, showed that 86,000 people in Quebec, Canada, gamble an average of $9,903 online per year. The fact that each interview lasted approximately 12 minutes shows that the interviewers had time to obtain lots of information from those that they were interviewing. Although a set of licenses was issued by ARJEL, the online gambling regulator of France, shortly before the commencement of the FIFA Football World Cup in South Africa there were many popular names that had not been issued licenses.

At the time ARJEL revealed that they were processing the remaining applications and that no application had been rejected until then. ARJEL advised that it would not take long before further applications would be issued and they have, in fact, already issued five more online gambling operators through a second list.
